This fortnight must have been busy for all the gamers. The biggest names in gaming technology both released new devices – Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s Playstation 4 have been launched only few days apart in the US.
Both companies announced that they managed to sell one million units in the first 24 hours only. This also marked the beginning of their fight for dominance during Christmas season.
But even if both companies publicly expressed their excitement with the popularity of their respective products it is necessary to put numbers and sales locations in perspective. Indeed on the one hand, Sony’s Playstation 4 hit one million with a launch in the US and Canada only. The console will arrive in other markets at the end of November. On the other hand, Microsoft’s Xbox One sold one million unit with a launch in 13 countries including Australia, Brazil, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the UK, New Zealand, Canada and the US. So it is quite easy to draw conclusion here: both companies sold one million products but in a different context. The release of the PS4 in the rest of those territories will bring another light on the subject.
As gaming remains a massively popular activity with more than one thirds of the British population playing video games let’s just keep an eye on those numbers. At the moment, who knows who will be the Gaming King of Christmas.
