Apple enters the Connected Cars Market

Apple announced the launch of “iOS in the car” confirming again that the automobile industry will definitively be one of the great field of innovation in the very near future. With 60 million cars sold in 2012, the car market which is gradually integrating technology to its core now also represents a new significant market to explore for companies like Apple, Google or Microsoft. All those firms are already competing – with Apple revealing its CarPlay system, Google perfectioning its Android in-car system called Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) and Microsoft offering Microsoft Sync .

Apple’s vice president Greg Joswiak said: “CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car. iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction We have an amazing lineup of auto rolling out CarPlay and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.” The first examples of CarPlay will come from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, all of which are premiering the technology in various car models this week. BMW, Ford, General Motors, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota all announced they are working on integrating CarPlay into their car models. If Apple manages to finalize deals with all those car manufacturers, it could reinforce again the locked Apple’s ecosystem thus making even more difficult for customers to switch to competing platforms –  exactly like Apple did with Mac, iPod, iPhone systems…

Apple’s CarPlay integrates your iPhone 5 to your car’s digital system. The idea is to make the access to your phone’s apps as well as your in-car system easier, safer and more convenient. Functionalities such as calling, texting, listening to music, navigating will be made available. In the future, Apple plans to allow third-parties application such as Spotify or Beats Radio to be added to the list of available functionalities. The integration of Siri into CarPlay allows you to directly tell Siri what functionality to access. Siri will also be able to read your texts and text back what you dictate it. The touchscreen as well as your car’s knob will be another way to control your car system.
